The Middle East Photovoltaic Industry Association (Mesia) reviewed the photovoltaic markets in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in its newly released Photovoltaic Market Outlook 2023 report. It provides an overview of the development of the photovoltaic industry in this region, and also includes green hydrogen, floating photovoltaic systems, and robotic cleaning technologies, among others.

The Middle East and North Africa region is one of the regions with the highest solar irradiance in the world. In the report, Mesia highlighted the most important achievements of the photovoltaic market in the major countries and regions in this region in the past year, and looked forward to their new goals by 2030. The following is a brief overview of the photovoltaic market in North Africa from this research report given by Mesia.

According to reports, Tunisia opened the first floating photovoltaic station in the Middle East and North Africa region in June 2022, with an installed capacity of 200kW.

By 2022, the cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaic systems in Morocco will reach 830MW. Morocco's commercial and industrial (C&I) PV market is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years after the passage of a long-awaited law allowing companies to connect renewable energy generation facilities to the medium-voltage grid.

Algeria installed 59MW of PV systems in 2022, compared to just 12MW in 2021. The country has established a new photovoltaic module factory with an annual capacity of 200MW, which mainly produces p-type PERC M3 photovoltaic modules with an output power of 405W~415W. This year, it will start producing photovoltaic modules of M10 and M12 sizes.

By the end of 2022, Egypt's renewable energy generation share will account for 20% of the total electricity generation, but photovoltaic power generation will only account for 2%. Mesia said it expects the country’s net metering program to support the future growth of the distributed PV industry, especially utility-scale PV projects for on-site consumption in the agriculture, cement and commercial sectors.

According to the latest official statistics, the cumulative installed capacity of photovoltaic systems in Sudan has reached 200MW, but given that most of the installed photovoltaic projects are off-grid projects, this figure is expected to be higher. In November 2022, the Sudanese government announced a new net metering scheme for PV projects with an installed capacity of less than 1MW, according to Mesia. And one of the largest photovoltaic power plants in the country was commissioned last year with an installed capacity of 54MW.
